The coffee table, that humble workhorse of the furniture game, is more than just a podium for magazines you don’t really read.
Sometimes, it floats.
Because sometimes, it’s made by NYC “kinetic furniture” racket RockPaperRobot, unveiling new homewares (and at least one magical coffee table) at this weekend’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair.
RockPaperRobot was founded by a roboticist who honestly might be the most fascinating person alive.
And her floating table will truly, actually amaze you.
It’s composed of walnut wood blocks, carefully calibrated magnets and a series of stealthy steel cables. The end result is a functional-yet-moveable surface that must be seen to be believed.
And at ICFF, Rock Paper Robot will be debuting the floating table’s new cousin: floating cube shelves that affix to your wall and then just … float there. In space. With your things on them.
Pics aren’t ready for the public just yet, but your pals at InsideHook were allowed a sneak peek.
Our response:
“Whoa.”
Nota bene: ICFF takes place at the Javits Center from tomorrow through Tuesday, and Rock Paper Robot will be in Booth 2271. Stop by to check out their stuff in person and tell ’em InsideHook sent ya.
