Holy matrimony, Batman!
The Dark Knight got down on one of his costumed knees on a Gotham City rooftop to propose to nemesis/love interest Catwoman in the latest issue of DC Comics’ Batman, which hit stores on Wednesday.
“Everyone’s done vengeance, everyone’s done ‘The night is so dark,’” writer Tom King told USA Today, which broke the news.
“Giving Batman more pain doesn’t reveal anything about his character because he’s taken as much pain as he can. But giving him love and joy, that combines with the tragedy of his past into something new and never done before,” he added about the events of issue #24.
Catwoman, who has become more of an anti-hero than a villain in recent years, has always held a place in the Caped Crusader’s heart that previous romantic partners (Vicki Vale and Talia al Ghul) couldn’t fill.
King said he solicited advice from his seven-year-old daughter, “who’s obsessed with both superheroes and romance,” for advice on how to script the proposal scene.
But fans should know going in that this will be a cliffhanger—as tense as any of the comic books featuring the Joker launching a plot to destroy Gotham. Catwoman’s answer doesn’t come until issue #25.
