The Honda Element and Jeep Wrangler have almost everything you need for a weekend off the grid.
Four-wheel drive. Plenty of trunk space. Unrepentant boxiness and whatever purpose that serves.
One thing they lack, though? A place to sleep.
Solving said problem: Ursa Minor, a San Diego retrofitting company that converts outdoor vehicles into Westfalia-style pop-tops.
Their version of the Element is especially ingenious: it adds a simple pop-out cover to the rear sunroof, with no alterations or significant overhauls necessary. The cover adds a 7×4′ sleeping space to the ride — so enough room for you and someone you don’t mind sharing close quarters with. They also added LED lights, and the walls have an extra screen layer that allows for cross ventilation.
Both the Honda and Jeep retrofits also allow for plenty of standing room in the back for changing, and they can still handle roof racks for ocean kayaks and surfboards.
