If you’ve spent time in any of the 100-plus countries where their cars are sold, you’ve probably seen the work of the Czech automaker Škoda. To the frustration of some automotive observers, Škoda’s vehicles are not sold in the United States, but they’ve still made a significant impact on the global car scene. That impact has been in effect for a while; the company was first established in 1925.
Over 60 years ago, Škoda modified the design of its 1100 OHC to create the 1100 OHC Coupe. Two coupes were created, which went on to compete in several races from 1960 to 1962. And, as Autoblog reports, Škoda recently delved back into its history to bring the 1100 OHC Coupe back.
This wasn’t easy. As the article points out, neither of the two coupes survived until the present day. One, in fact, caught fire many years ago. Parts from both have been preserved by car enthusiasts, and those served as the core of the restoration project.
Eventually, using a combination of vintage and newly minted parts, the coupe was restored — and after even more work, it was made ready to race again. It’s capable of reaching 124 miles per hour; as for where we might see it compete, Škoda has yet to reveal details.
