The most badass 4x4s aren’t designed for recreation. In fact, you can’t even buy one. That’s because they’re service-only extrication vehicles.
Case in point: Surgo, a new 4×4 mountain rescue concept. From the team at 2sympleks, a studio in Warsaw, Poland, this heavy-duty terrain-tackler was desiged to meet the needs of two local rescue organizations: Górskie Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe (Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue) and Tatrzańskie Ochotnicze Pogotowie Ratunkowe (Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue). The two non-profit units help everyone from climbers to tourists acros the country’s numerous mountain ranges.
Surgo’s most impressive features include its ability to lock in a shifted position and “approach and [depart] angles nearing 90 degrees,” as noted in Designboom, thanks to new suspension developed by Poland’s Automotive Industry Institute.

Inside, there’s room for eight rescue workers to ride to the scene. But with transformable chairs, four of those seats can be folded down and used to transport up to two stretchers. Beyond that, details are scarce at the moment. For now, the vehicle will remain a daydream, with only renderings and a handful of prospective specs available at this time.
