Talk to prospective electric vehicle drivers and you might well hear concerns about fast charging while on the go. It’s an understandable concern — and the closer that fast charging can get to filling up a tank of gas, the more widespread EV adoption will become. It’s something that can have an effect on, say, road trips more than everyday commutes — but the idea of having somewhere to charge while out shopping has a definite appeal.
While IKEA isn’t going to be as regularly-visited a destination as a local grocery store — unless your household goes through a lot of Swedish meatballs every week — the news that fast chargers are coming to dozens of the nation’s IKEA locations does feel like another step towards making EV usage more widespread.
An article at Engadget has more details on the plan. The devices will be fast chargers from Electrify America, which drivers can connect to using CCS and CHAdeMO connector — though the former charges at a much faster rate than the latter.
As of now, the plan is to bring these charging stations to over 25 IKEA locations in 18 states, beginning later this year. The process of getting the stations up and running will continue through 2023. Unfortunately, details were not available on whether or not the charging stations will also get a cool Swedish (or Swedish-sounding) name. The possibilities are limitless.
