Queue Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir.
Because by the looks of it, that’s the theme song for Tesla’s long-reported semi truck.
At a TED Talk last week, renegade tech visionary Elon Musk teased a photo of Tesla’s big rig project, and while it’s literally the definition of a teaser pic — a shadowy cargo truck masked at dusk — it’s got people across multiple industries talking.
Because while the project is certainly ominous for the legions of truck drivers across America, it would be a boon for highway safety and efficiency.
At about twenty minutes into his TED Talk chat, Musk described the vehicle as a “spry truck” that can be driven around like a sports car. “Essentially it’s meant to alleviate the heavy-duty trucking loads,” he went on. “With the Tesla Semi we want to show that no, an electric truck actually can out-torque any diesel semi. And if you had a tug-of-war competition, the Tesla Semi will tug the diesel semi uphill.”
The man is known for bold claims and disrupting the industry. And as Tech Republic points out, that might very well be the case for not only the trucking industry, but for truck part suppliers and the energy sector. One could also postulate that the semi will link up to Musk’s Hyperloop, which rumor has it will be as much an aide to shipping freight as it will be to humans.
But no one knows for sure. We’ll have to wait til Tesla reveals the vehicle in full this fall.
