Last year, Motor Trend named the Lucid Air as its Car of the Year, signifying a massive step forward and a heightened profile for the emergent EV manufacturer. Where’s an automaker to go from there? In the case of Lucid, the answeer involves embracing its most luxurious side.
Based on the company’s announcement, it sounds as though “Sapphire” will be the designation it gives to its most luxurious tier of vehicles — meaning that the Lucid Air Sapphire is unlikely to be the last Lucid vehicle with “Sapphire” in the name.
As for what interested buyers can expect, it’s here that the details get especially intriguing. The powertrain will consist of three motors, with two in the back of the car and one in the front. It’s capable of delivering 1,200 horsepower, eclipsing the 1,050 hp that the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance can achieve. That also means that it’s capable of going from zero to 60 in two seconds.
Derek Jenkins, the company’s SVP for Brand and Design, addressed the origins of the Sapphire name. “Sapphire is among the most valued gemstones, prized for their brilliance, color, and hardness,” Jenkins said in a statement. “Imperial Blue has long been the de facto national color for American motorsports teams engaged in international competitions. As Lucid’s dedicated ultra-high-performance brand, Sapphire references this history while setting new standards for innovation and technology.”
Reservations are set to open on the 23rd of this month, with an expected delivery date sometime next year. The cost? $249,000.
