Carroll Shelby’s Cobra 427 Super Snake Is Being Sold at Auction

There aren’t too many cars about which one can say that they’re the only one of their kind left in the world. In the case of a deep blue 1966 Cobra 427 Super Snake, however, that would be an entirely accurate description of its status. Carroll Shelby was known for designing powerful, visually striking cars; this might well be the apex of both of those qualities. And the last one built by Shelby American is going up for sale.

Road & Track reports that CSX 3015 — described in the article as “[t]he most extreme factory-built Shelby Cobra in existence” — will be auctioned off next month by Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was once part of Carroll Shelby’s personal collection.

“I wanted it to be the fastest, meanest car on the road,” Shelby said in a 2007 interview. And even then, Shelby felt confident about its staying power. “Forty years later, it will still kick the tail of just about anything in the world,” he added.

What makes a Super Snake so super? Its V-8 engine is bolstered by a pair of Paxton superchargers, for one thing. This particular car began its life in 1965 as a Cobra Competition roadster. It traveled to Europe, returning to the United States in 1966 and being upgraded to Super Snake status the following year — which included making it street legal.

The last few times this Super Snake has been sold, the price was over $5 million — $5.1 million in 2015 and $5.5 million in 2007. This particular model won’t come cheap, but whoever owns it can rest easy knowing that it’s the only one of its kind in the world.
