Seiko, Bulova, Citizen — these are some of the brands you’ll come across if you’re in the market for an entry-level dive watch. One watchmaker that often, curiously, gets left out of the conversation is Tissot, even though their Seastar 1000 checks a few crucial boxes: a reliable automatic movement, affordable price tag, and 300 meters (or about 1,000 feet) of water resistance, meaning it isn’t just for show.
For a limited time, that diver is even more affordable as Nordstrom is offering big discounts on two styles of the Tissot Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80: the classic stainless steel bracelet which is about $130 off, and one with a fabric strap that’s around $255 off.
The explosion of popularity in the diver category has led to a bottomless pit of ripoffs, caricatures and straight-up goofy timepieces. The Seastar however manages to give the people what they want — a muscular ceramic bezel, sizable 43mm case, beefy hands — without going overboard, pun intended. But you don’t need to live near a body of water to wear this watch, and you won’t be accused of wearing a “desk diver,” either.
