“It feels like my birthday!”
That’s what you say when it’s your coworker’s big day, but they end up bringing in donuts for the whole office.
Wait until you see what Porsche is giving us all to mark its 70th year: a brand new edition of the 935, a race car that pays tribute to the iconic 935/78 Le Mans “Moby Dick.”
As Porsche notes, that nickname owes to the original vehicle’s “elongated shape, massive fairings and white base colour.” All of those elements carry over here to wide-eyed, awooga effect, but “Moby Dick” is relevant here in another way — its rarity. Only 77 editions will be made, with deliveries starting June 2019 at a price of €701,948, a number evoking both the 70th anniversary and the year of Porsche Sportscar’s founding.
The announcement today has the collective car world hooting and hollering, partly because unlike most car announcements, we aren’t left to speculate based on slick photos and promo videos alone.
We’ve got live video, compadres, with some sweet, sweet rev action.

We’d like to echo user @steez_mcqueen_ who says, “This thing gives me hope for the world in 2018.”
Under that long-tail, flat-nosed exterior is a single seater based on Porsche’s current road-legal 911 GT2 RS sportscar. That means a 3.8-liter six-cylinder twin-turbo engine putting out 700 HP. But this one’s not street legal, the marque citing its potential for “clubsport events and private training on racetracks.” If the whole $815K price tag bit didn’t squash your ownership dreams, that little detail might.
Nonetheless, there’s a lot to love about the new 935 that we’ll happily spend the weekend poring over. Wait a second, are those LEDs on the rear wing?
Happy birthday to us.
