The new Mercedes-Maybach concept is here and it’s the first full-sized, open-top, true Maybach the company has produced in decades.
The Vision 6 Cabriolet is a 20-foot-long electric convertible that has a drive system that gets 750 horsepower and has a range of more than 200 miles on one charge of the battery, which is stored under its floor, reports Bloomberg. The car was unveiled at a private estate on Pebble Beach Golf Course in Carmel, California.
However, don’t get your hopes up yet. You won’t be able to buy it. The car is just a one-of-one example of Mercedes’ vision for the cars it wants to make in 2035 and beyond.
The company has big plans for the car though. It says the Maybach 6 Cabriolet will be able to go from zero to 60 mph in fewer than four seconds, writes Bloomberg, and will have a top speed of 155 mph. With just five minutes of charging, the car can achieve 60 miles of range, thanks to a new special “super” charger that Mercedes has developed.
All of that sounds good by itself, but the design is what really distinguishes the car from the pack. The hood opens up on either side, and the custom-made fabric top has been interwoven with rose gold threads. Dietmar Exler, the president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz, said that “it’s about beauty” and though the car will not go into full production, it is possible that it could end up on an awards stand of its own.
“It’s not difficult to imagine that 30 years from now, our car might take top honors at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance,” he said to Bloomberg.
The last full-sized, open-top, true Mayback, the company, produced was the Maybach Zeppelin, which the company made from 1929-1939. It weighed more than 6,000 pounds and had a V12 engine.
This new car is supposed to “embody classic Art Deco proportions” writes Bloomberg. It has a curved body, “swooping sidelines,” and a very long hood. And the inspiration for the radiator-style grille across the front comes from another classic look: the pinstriped suit. Meanwhile, the rear of the car is supposed to look like a yacht. There is a wooden floor inlaid with aluminum, which “underscores the yachting connection.”
The car, of course, has touch controls and intelligent navigation, which are linked to calendars and a voice-activated concierge system.
Gorden Wagener, the chief design officer of Daimler AG, said that the Vision 6 Cabriolet is just the next of many steps the company is taking.
“We are having Mercedes Maybach as the ultimate luxury brand, and we will expand that brand,” he said to Bloomberg. “You can’t imagine where we will be ten years from now.”
