If you’re up on your Aston Martin clippings, you know the British automakers have lately gone full Nostalgia Factory. Witness: A new heritage shop in London, along with 28 James Bond Db5s in production.
But you don’t have to wait on Aston Martin’s anniversaries or marketing initiatives to get in on some vintage car action, because Sotheby’s just put a pre-Bond ’62 Lagonda Rapide on the docket for its Paris 2019 auction.
Produced from 1961 to 1964, only 55 Lagonda Rapides were ever built. After acquiring Lagonda in 1947, Aston Martin resurrected the marque a decade-and-change later, creating the Rapide. While fame was fated for the DB series (Goldfinger does wonders for brand recognition, we hear), the four-door Rapide was none too shabby. The saloon could crank it up to 125-MPH, and featured swoon-worthy lines from Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, an Italian coachbuilder.
Best thing about this car, though? That “we really doubled down on this and it somehow worked” red leather interior.
