A Star is Born is about a lot of things. Hollywood’s obsession with love at first song. Making it. Alocholism. Music written the old-fashoined way, on loose-leaf paper. And the West’s role as prehistoric America, built upon centuries of whispered testaments and festering tragedies.
Somewhere in all that, between Bradley Cooper (singing!) and Lady Gaga (acting!), the film carves its own aesthetic. It mentions California and Arizona by name, but with many a mountain-backed festival, there is a sense that the movie takes place in Anywhere, USA, a sort of everyman’s land that seems perpetually 10 minutes away from a gas station with a dusty parking lot and a faded Coca-Cola sign in the window. (Which, disclaimer, is an exact tableau from the movie.)
That commitment extends to the clothing of Cooper’s character, Jackson Maine. The guy (no spoiler, promise) is a bit of a trainwreck, a local rockstar gone good-and-bad who ends most nights on the floor. But Maine’s sense of style (a country star, motoryclist and rancher walk into a saloon) is somehow always on point. Seriously, a couple of his jackets might even win Best Supporting Actor noms.
And thankfully, it truly is a look anyone can rock. Step 1) Put on your favorite jeans. Step 2) Pair with any of the jackets, shirts, boots and accessories we’ve compiled below.
