You’d think with all of the powerful men running around our country’s capital city, the fashion world would have followed. Historically, that hasn’t been the case. But now, slowly but surely, Washington, D.C. is beginning to establish its very own sartorial bonafides. Whether it’s regional outposts of beloved brands or homegrown talent coming into its own, the District is now home to some seriously top-notch menswear.
Here are eight of our favorite places to buy suits, sweaters and even sneakers. It’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s a great place to start.
Sid Mashburn
If you’re looking to invest in a suit that’s going to last a long time, Sid Mashburn is the place to go in D.C. The Atlanta-based designer’s local outpost feels like the closet of a modern-day Jay Gatsby, full of welcoming sunlight and extensive clothing options. If you’re not in the market for a suit, you can still find something to love, like Sid’s take on Levi’s or a colorful assortment of trousers.
Billy Reid
Billy Reid’s Georgetown location has some of the finest menswear in the city, including elegantly crafted suits, supple sweaters and strikingly patterned shirts. But it’s not just the clothes that make this spot worth a visit: Nestled inside one of Georgetown’s historic townhouses, the welcoming space is as warm and cozy as the knitwear. Plus, while you peruse the wares the well-informed staff is quick to offer a water or even a glass of bourbon (or both!) depending on the day’s weather.
Suitsupply
If you need a suit but don’t want to spend quite as much as you might at Sid Mashburn, Suitsupply is a fantastic option. The Georgetown output of the Dutch clothier offers sharp, stylish suits right off the rack, while the in-house team of tailors can help get you off to your Hill gig looking good. Expect a wide array of options, including double-breasted, single-breasted, stripes and plaids.
Somewhere
We’ve already covered Somewhere a few times on the site, and for a good reason. The flagship Navy Yard location offers fantastic imports from brands hard to find anywhere, let alone in D.C., like Acronym, Undercover, Rhude and more. Meanwhile, the Union Market store is the home of the latest and greatest in sneaker releases. Not into the idea of waiting in line? Somewhere has plenty of its own branded items, plus attainable offerings from Vans, Salomon, Converse and more.
Atmos
The shop formally known as UBIQ is now Atmos and offers more sneakers than you could possibly hope for, from brands like Hoka, New Balance, Nike, Adidas and others. This cheery space is your one-stop shop in Northwest for all things shoe-related.
Shop Made in DC
Shop Made is all throughout D.C., which means it’s pretty easy to stumble into one of their many locations and sample some well-considered goods from local creators: Bailiwick’s fantastic D.C.-branded goods, as well as those outside the style space, including dopp kits from Villondo & Co., duffle bags from Chris Cardi and more. It’s a great way to directly support local makers and ensure they can continue their creative pursuits.
The Museum
Despite its status as one of the city’s oldest and best streetwear shops, we still feel like The Museum doesn’t quite get the recognition it deserves. Featuring its own branded gear and an ever-changing selection of new offerings, The Museum is always putting unique spins on its thesis that clothing in and of itself can be art.
Maketto
Nestled in the heart of H Street Northeast, Maketto doesn’t have quite the offering it once had, but there’s still no shortage of good menswear, including the shop’s branded shirts and plenty of sneakers. But other goods can be discovered throughout the expansive location, including branded incense sticks, beanies and socks. Cool Kids Vinyl on the second floor has some solid offerings, too, including cool tote bags to hold the records you snag while you’re there.
