It’s the classic Bond villain scenario: While all the No. 2’s and No. 3’s are out doing all the dirty work—like public displays of operatic saber-rattling—the big villain kicks back, relaxes, and parties down at his luxurious resort.
According to Britain’s The Sun newspaper, this is exactly what North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been up to on a private island resort known as “North Korea’s Ibiza.” The tabloid recently published what it claims to be satellite photos (i.e. Google Earth images) of the sprawling, seaside estate.
Per the tabloid, the grounds include a sylvan palace, private airstrip, railway, and sports complex. Jong-un has invited guests there, including former Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman. In a Dujour interview, Rodman opened up about his relationship with the leader, saying that he spent time on Jong-un’s 400-foot yacht. In an October 2013 interview with the Sun, Rodman claimed that he also spent seven days on the leader’s “Pleasure Island,” which included Jong-un’s yacht, jet-skiing, lots of high-end alcohol, and a legion of servants.
A much different face has been painted on Jong-un’s luxury resorts in the past. CNBC noted that Jong-un also owns a giant, practically empty ski resort, which is kept clear from snowfall by “work gangs” of men, women, and children.
Those displays of wealth come as countless North Koreans starve.
