The 94th Annual Academy Awards were, in a word, wild. The slap heard around the world, groundbreaking victories and some serious celebrity presence all contributed to the spectacle, but more than just the anxious-giggle-inducing drama of film’s biggest night, the Oscars presented a return to sartorial form by a circuit that has been COVID-crippled in recent years. The awards show was really, truly alive, with leading man after leading man stunting in the likes of Gucci, Valentino and YSL suiting. Ultra-luxe watches came out to play. Shirts were lost in the shuffle. It was a bona fide red carpet event.
As always, a select few stand out from the crowd. As expected, Dune man and general heartthrob Timothée Chalamet appeared in arguably the boldest look of the night, but there were surprise suit stars as well. We’ve highlighted some of our favorite looks, from subdued suiting to unmistakable menswear, that earned the InsideHook award for best dressed. Browse the six best menswear moments at the 94th Academy Awards below.
Timothée Chalamet
If there’s one (style) moment to remember from the Oscars 2022, it’s obviously Mr. Chalamet’s bold outfit. The jacket, bedazzling fresh off the runway from the heartthrob’s favorite Louis Vuitton, is technically part of the women’s collection, but little Timmy pulled off a masterclass in breaking traditional gender boundaries and actually looking good while doing it. The flattering cut is forefront of mind, but the sans-shirt decision helps give the whole thing a bit more masculine movie-star intrigue. An Oscar-worthy look, all around.
David Oyelowo
David Oyelowo is the epitome of BPE (Big Print Energy). The British actor’s floral affair was one of the brightest looks of the night, in more ways than one.
Troy Kotsur
It was a huge night for the CODA star, who is only the second-ever deaf actor to take home the prestigious award, and his acceptance speech accordingly stole the show, with a little help from a very good hat.
Simu Liu
Fortune favors the bold, and we favor Simu Liu in a cherry red Omega tux. A winning smile, buckle detailing and all the charisma in the world don’t hurt, either.
Andrew Garfield
A schoolgirl bow might not seem like leading man attire at first glance, but Garfield manages to pull it off with stylish, velvety aplomb. It’s not just his Gucci suit that’s exceptional — his Omega Speedmaster ’57, color-coordinated no less, is the ultimate dressy accessory in our book.
Shaun White
We could have never predicted that, of all people, Shaun “I’m talking Mountain Dews, baby” White would be the one to bring home the best classic tux award, but perhaps we should have. After all, the pro-snowboarder has a legitimate legacy as an impeccably dressed short king.
BONUS: Zendaya
In yet another stunning example of powerful women pulling off menswear moves for the ages, Zendaya’s Vanity Fair Afterparty suiting — a 2022 Sportsmax look, complete with diamond brooch and leather tie — is a not-so-gentle reminder that it’s the Euphoria star’s world; we’re just living in it. That, and that the bold power suit is an elite-tier spring style move.
