If a home that blends seamlessly into its surroundings is what you’re after, this stunning former municipal water reservoir could be the perfect home.
Woolbrook Reservoir in Sidmouth, Devon, England, has been transformed into an elegant home filled with light, despite being largely hidden and nestled into the top of a hill.
Robert and Ann Hardy bought the decommissioned reservoir, which resembled a squat, concrete drum, from South West Water in 2008 and spent three years and spent nearly $1 million turning it into a one-of-a-kind home. But they are now selling the property, called, appropriately, “The Reservoir,” through the Bradleys real estate agency for $1.1 million.
Although the property is sunk below the garden, it lacks a subterranean feel because all the main rooms look out over a sunny, central atrium.
The rooms have double-height ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The Hardys also installed a drainage system to disperse rainwater from the courtyard and put artificial turf on the roof so the house almost indistinguishable from the surrounding countryside.
Stephen French from Bradleys said: “The couple bought it realizing its potential, he’s a structural engineer by trade, and they wanted something to get their teeth into.
“The house is unique, there’s nothing comparable. The beauty of it is, it sits on a decent plot of land but it’s also less than a mile and a half from the ocean.
“It feels secluded but you’re not far from the town centre. There’s a housing estate you drive through and then up a private lane and this is one of three properties.
