Food delivery apps have made it easy to order a burger and fries without ever leaving your couch, save to open the front door. Now, cannabis users in Toronto can enjoy their flower and edibles without driving to the dispensary. Uber Eats has partnered with online cannabis retailer Leafly to bring products from three different dispensaries to residents in the Canadian city. All they have to do is prove they’re 19 years or older upon arrival of their weed and other THC products. According to Leafly, this partnership is the first of its kind, and both companies hope that it will help to stop cannabis users from driving while high.
“Leafly has been empowering the cannabis marketplace in Canada for more than four years and we support more than 200 cannabis retailers in the [Greater Toronto Area],” Leafly CEO Yoko Miyashita said in a statement. “We are thrilled to work with Uber Eats to help licensed retailers bring safe, legal cannabis to people across the city.”
It’s been about 10 years since apps like Drizly started delivering booze to U.S. customers. With cannabis becoming legal in more and more states, it seems that a delivery partnership wouldn’t be far behind, assuming companies can get past the regulatory red tape. But Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is optimistic.
“When the road is clear for cannabis, when federal laws come into play, we’re absolutely going to take a look at it,” Khosrowshahi said in a CNBC interview last year.
Until American weed users can order cannabis along with their California roll, they’ll just have to get their supply the old fashioned way.
