Over the weekend, Cameron Smith won the British Open with an impressive run of form. It was Smith’s first major championship and further evidence that he’s having a tremendous year. (He’s currently ranked second in the world.) A day after his victory in Scotland, Smith was making golf headlines for a very different reason — TMZ reported that Smith was close to a deal with LIV Golf.
Signing the number two player in the world would represent a significant step for LIV Golf — and a significant step in their jostling with the PGA Tour.
TMZ cites unnamed sources as being “shocked if the deal didn’t happen.”
Earlier this month, Bryson DeChambeau hinted that he had received at least $125 million to join the LIV Golf Invitational Series. If Smith is signing with LIV Golf as well, it begs the question of how much he would be signing for, as well as the duration of his contract.
As the Sporting News reported, Smith was asked about rumors that he’d be signing with LIV Golf at the British Open. His response — “I just won the British Open and you’re asking about that? I think that’s pretty — not that good.” — wasn’t much of a denial.
Smith isn’t the only high-profile golfer linked to LIV Golf this week. The Palm Beach Post recently reported that three former Masters champions — Hideki Matsuyama, Bubba Watson and Adam Scott — are among those linked to the breakaway golf tour.
