In a bid to boost golf’s popularity among casual fans, the produces of Netflix’s popular F1 documentary series are teaming up with the PGA Tour and Vox Media Studios on a new show that will feature some of the biggest stars currently hitting the links.
London’s Box to Box Films, the creators of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, will be getting behind-the-scenes access at some of the biggest events in golf including the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, The Open and the season-ending FedExCup.
“This partnership with Netflix presents the PGA Tour and the four major championships an opportunity to tap into a completely new and diverse audience,” said PGA Tour chief media officer Rick Anderson. “This documentary will give fans an authentic look into the real lives of our athletes, and what it’s like to win — and lose — during a season on the PGA Tour.”
The still-to-be-named PGA Tour show will have “unprecedented access inside the ropes and behind the scenes” as the series strives to “capture the intensity of training, travel, victory, and defeat through the lens of a diverse group of players and their support teams.” All that access could pay off in a big way as Drive to Survive has helped F1’s popularity skyrocket in the U.S. since its release in 2019.
“We are thrilled to bring golf’s leading organizations and players together for this first-of-its-kind partnership and unparalleled window into life on the Tour,” said Netflix VP Brandon Riegg. “Our members will love getting to know the players and personalities as well as the iconic venues along the way. Even the most devoted golf fans have never seen the sport quite like this.”
In alphabetical order, the players who are confirmed to participate are Abraham Ancer, Daniel Berger, Cameron Champ, Joel Dahmen, Tony Finau, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Harry Higgs, Max Homa, Viktor Hovland, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Kevin Na, Mito Pereira, Ian Poulter, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson. Keita Nakajima, the world’s No. 1 amateur, will also be featured.
In related news, the ongoing situation at the Australian Open involving World No. 1 tennis star Novak Djokovic and his visa status will also be documented in a new behind-the-scenes Netflix series that’s set to be produced by Box to Box. In addition to filming in Melbourne at the Open, camera crews have also been granted access at Wimbledon later this year by the All England Club.
Despite all the drama surrounding his visa situation, Novak Djokovic secured the No. 1 seed and drew fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic as his opponent in the first round in Melbourne. If Australia immigration minister Alex Hawke doesn’t revoke Djokovic’s reinstated visa during the tournament, he’ll be looking to win his 10th Australian Open title.
