When asked if Ferrari would ever consider building a self-driving car, Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said “over my dead body.”
A fair stance to be sure, but had he known the bizarrely macabre story that unfolded this week in Italy involving a Sardinian crime syndicate and plans to unearth the remains of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari for ransom, Marchionne may have chosen a different expression.
According to Italian police on the island of Sardinia, a plot to steal Ferrari’s body from its resting place in an above-ground family tomb was uncovered during an arms and drug trafficking probe.
The investigators who foiled the plot said they suspect the gang that plotted to nab the body had planned to demand a ransom from the Ferrari family or company to return it, Reuters reported.
Had they succeeded, the graverobbers still wouldn’t have been able to afford a 1950 166 MM. Go figure.
