At a time in American cinema where franchises and sequels abound, the career of Cameron Crowe stands out for its overall avoidance of such things. Admittedly, many of Crowe’s films don’t leave a lot of loose ends at their conclusion, and it’s hard to imagine what the sequels to some of his films might look like — We Bought Another Zoo, perhaps? But evidently, one person who has spent time thinking about potential sequels to Cameron Crowe films is, well, Cameron Crowe.
A new report at Indiewire finds that Crowe has considered revisiting the settings and characters of 3 of his best-loved films — Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous.
Crowe’s comments came in an interview with Collider. Among the subjects he covered was his interest in making a Jerry Maguire followup about Rod and Marcee Tidwell, played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Regina King. “You don’t want to see Regina King do Marcee Tidwell? I’d do that in a second,” Crowe said.
He also discussed revisiting Say Anything‘s Lloyd Dobler, though he admitted that that might no longer be logistically possible. “I think I kinda lost my way, where I lost the window where we could have done something maybe a few years ago,” he said.
Crowe mentioned that there “may be more to Almost Famous” as well — and suggested that its story could be taken into the 1980s and 90s. Crowe has also revisited Almost Famous as a musical, which received positive reviews not long before the pandemic paused live theater.
The filmmaker’s character-driven sensibilities make the idea of revisiting some of his works appealing — after all, there’s a reason why plenty of people continue to savor his most acclaimed films.
