Several days after Jeep pulled their Super Bowl ad starring Bruce Springsteen in the wake of the revelation that he was arrested on DWI charges back in November, more details have emerged about the musician’s run-in with the law.
According to court documents, R.L. Hayes, the park ranger who arrested Springsteen at the Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook, NJ on Nov. 14, watched him take a shot of tequila and then start his motorcycle’s engine after stopping to chat with fans. Springsteen reportedly admitted to Hayes that he had done two shots in the previous 20 minutes but initially refused to take a breathalyzer test. The ranger noted in his statement of probable cause that Springsteen “smelt strongly of alcohol,” had “glassy eyes” and was “visibly swaying back and forth.”
“The Patron bottle that the shot was poured out of was completely empty (750 ml.),” the officer wrote in his report. Springsteen also “took 45 total steps during the walk and turn instead of the instructed 18” during a field sobriety test.
The report makes no mention of his blood alcohol content, but citing “two people close to Mr. Springsteen who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly,” The New York Times reports that the musician’s blood-alcohol level was just .02, significantly under the legal limit of .08.
Springsteen is charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. He has not yet publicly commented on the arrest.
