You’d get excited, too, if you won your seventh Super Bowl. And if you’re not a veteran drinker, you might overindulge.
As a Jets fan, I’m rarely on Tom Brady’s side, but I have to admit the man has become quite good (and self-deprecating) on social media. When the Tampa Bay QB was caught celebrating a bit too much at Wednesday’s Super Bowl victory boat parade, it was Brady himself who had the last laugh, chiming in with this well-timed bon mot:
“Noting to see her…just litTle avoCado tequila,” he tweeted, which hilariously referenced his (probably inebriated) state of mind as well as his famously draconian diet, which includes healthy delicacies like avocado ice cream.
So, no, “avocado” tequila doesn’t exist — the spirit has to be crafted from Blue Weber agave. And even flavored or infused varietals (like those from Tanteo, 21 Seeds, etc.) would aim for fruits and ingredients that would leave more of an impression.
But since tequila and avocados are a pretty solid pairing (well, margaritas and guac), there had to be a recipe that approximated Brady’s joke, right? Of course there is.
The avocado here adds a little creaminess and maybe a nutty or earthy hint, but overall the impression is pretty much textural. It may also soften that chili lime salt rim.
The Don Julio Avoketo Margarita
- 6 oz. Tequila Don Julio Reposado
- 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
- 1 Avocado (Skin and pit taken out)
- Pinch of salt
- Cilantro (optional)
- Chili Lime Salt
Combine Tequila Don Julio Reposado, fresh lime juice, avocado and salt into a blender with 2 1/2 cups crushed ice. Blend until texture is smooth. Pour contents into a rocks glass rimmed with chili lime salt over fresh ice. Garnish with cilantro and lime wheel. Serves four.
If you’re wondering about other spirits and avocado: Verpoorten is a Dutch liqueur called advocaat that is apparently based on an avocado-based spirit, but does not contain the fruit itself. One London distillery has also tried to make avocado a base for spirits. And while we’re not huge advocates of this becoming a trend, avocado cocktails are definitely a real thing.
