After losing her seat in the Senate by falling to Democrat Raphael Warnock in the Georgia runoff race, Republican Kelly Loeffler, the co-owner of the Atlanta Dream, may want to get rid of her basketball team.
If she does, it appears as if she has a potential buyer: LeBron James.
In addition to his tweet, James spoke about the Georgia election following his game Tuesday night against the Grizzlies, a win.
“To hear my people turnout in Georgia in the fashion that they did, I’m definitely going to get some more information on it, but I heard they turned out in Georgia, and that’s commendable,” James said. “It’s something that we started with More Than A Vote, and we want to continue to do that, continue to support actions like this and causes that went on today. Proud of my people for getting out there and doing what they do best, and that’s being heard, being seen and being powerful and being engaged.”
Loeffler, who co-owns the Dream with Atlanta philanthropist Mary Brock, denounced the Black Lives Matter movement and pushed back against the WNBA’s Say Her Name initiative last season, leading players in the league and on her team to support Warnock’s run to the Senate.
“The statement ‘Black lives matter’ is very different than the organization Black Lives Matter,” Loeffler said in a July interview with ESPN. “I think we all agree the life of every African American is important.”
Though Loeffler has maintained she does not want to sell her stake in the team, the WNBA Players’ Association has campaigned for commissioner Cathy Engelbert to remove her as an owner of the Dream. Perhaps the loss to Warnock will change Loeffler’s mind and she will opt to sell to James.
As of now, the second Georgia run-off election between Republican Senator David Purdue and Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff remains too close to call. According to the latest Associated Press figures, Ossoff is leading Perdue by 16,370 votes with 98 percent of estimated votes reported.
