With nothing but open field in front of him after finding a massive hole in Philadelphia’s defensive front, all New York quarterback Daniel Jones had to do was stay on his feet and keep running to score a long touchdown on Thursday Night Football.
He couldn’t do it.
It’s been a season of missed opportunities just like that for the Giants as New York blew an 11-point lead in the final minutes of last night’s game against the Eagles and lost 22-21 to Philadelphia.
Despite his failed run, Jones had the Giants ahead 21-10 after a 2-yard pass to Sterling Shepard with 6:17 left. Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz was able to cut the deficit to 21-16 and, after the 2-point conversion failed, got the ball back with 2:02 to go.
Wentz, who threw for 359 yards and two TDs and ran for a score, was then able to march the Philly offense down the field and gave the Eagles the lead for good with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Boston Scott with 40 seconds left.
Now at 2-4-1, Philadelphia somehow leads the putrid NFC East with the Cowboys (2-4), who take on the Washington Football Team in D.C. on Sunday, in second place.
“This was huge for us,” Wentz said. “The NFC East is wide open.”
Given how bad the NFC East is, it seems likely the division winner will follow in the footsteps of teams like the 2010 Seattle Seahawks (7-9) and 2014 Carolina Panthers (7-8-1) and make the playoffs despite having a record below .500.
Sadly for us all, the next time both of these teams play will also be in primetime as the Giants (1-6) will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football to end Week 8 the night after the Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
