They call it the Great Outdoors. Not Indoors.
But with an increasingly lavish range of trailers, campers and mobile homes flooding the market, it would appear that notion has been lost in the fray.
Which is why we’re big proponents of Airstream’s newest trailer, Basecamp, an abridged version of their iconic silver bullet whose backcountry capabilities are every bit the equal of its creature comforts.
Inside, you’re looking at a compact, convertible rear space that can accommodate indoor dining, sleeping or extra storage, depending on your needs. Everything is stainless steel, and the gas range and sink have covers that allow for more counter space. And of course there’s a shower and toilet, solar panels and a WiFi Bose Bluetooth Soundlink speaker you can take in and out of the trailer. Good amenities, no doubt.
But the big benefit is how it handles: think larger wheels for off-roading, an aggressive departure angle for switchbacks and ground clearance, an aerodynamic shape that reduces fuel consumption, and wheel flares and side skirts that protect the undercarriage from debris.
It’s also fairly light: when it’s fully loaded at 3,500 pounds, most SUVs and crossovers can tow it. There are also some smart add-ons geared toward keeping you outside, like a rear tent and outdoor patio.
All in, Airstream has just made it simpler and cozier than ever (again) to take a last-minute trip to the woods.
