Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder Starts Jan. 2 Press Conference With “Happy Thanksgiving”

It was not a great introduction to the franchise for new coach Ron Rivera

Though it’s a day late, it’s still totally socially acceptable to say “Happy New Year” on January 2.

Instead of doing that, Redskins owner Daniel Snyder wished the assembled media “Happy Thanksgiving” at an introductory press conference for new Washington coach Ron Rivera yesterday.

It was a weird way to start the Rivera era in Washington but, in some ways, very appropriate.

After all, Snyder — who has owned the Redskins since 1999 and never seen his team advance beyond the second round of the playoffs — is known as one of the worst owners in sports, on par with perhaps only New York Knicks owner James Dolan.

Despite that, Rivera is convinced that Washington, which has gone 142-193-1 during Snyder’s tenure as owner, is the right place for him and he believes the team has enough pieces in place to be competitive as soon as next season.

“I told him I didn’t want to go through a five-year rebuilding process,” Rivera said. “I don’t have the patience, and from what I’ve read, neither does he. So we understand that. He said, ‘I want this to be the last job you have in the NFL. I want you to go from coaching the Redskins to collecting Social Security.’ I turn 58 next week, so I’m getting close. I really believe this is the right fit. I’m excited about it. We’ll know in a few years.”

Rivera, who was fired by the Panthers during the season, went 76-63-1 as the head coach in Carolina.
