Having already fired coach Jay Gruden during the season, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder is continuing to shake things up at the top of his organization and has also parted ways with team president Bruce Allen.
Allen, who had a 10-year run atop the Redskins’ organization, essentially served as the team’s general manager and was responsible for many of Washington’s questionable personnel moves. The team went to the playoffs twice under Allen, losing both times in the wildcard round.
“As this season concludes, Bruce Allen has been relieved of his duties as President of the Washington Redskins and is no longer with the organization,” Snyder wrote in a message to fans. “Like our passionate fan base, I recognize we have not lived up to the high standards set by great Redskins teams, coaches and players who have come before us. As we reevaluate our team leadership, culture and process of winning football games, I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead to renew our singular focus and purpose of bringing championship football back to Washington D.C.”
With Allen gone, Snyder is expected to hire former Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera to take the reins in Washington.
A fixture in Carolina for nine seasons, Rivera was fired by the team after the Panthers fell to 5-7 on the season. He finished his tenure in Carolina with a 76-63-1 regular-season record and a 3-4 postseason mark.
In other NFL coaching news, the New York Giants fired coach Pat Shurmur. In two seasons on the job, Shurmur amassed a 9-23 record.
The Cleveland Browns also fired Freddie Kitchens following a 33-23 loss to the lowly Cincinnati Bengals.
Entering the season as Super Bowl sleepers, the Browns compiled a 6-10 record with Kitchens at the helm.
