When J.Crew’s head menswear designer Frank Mutyjens launched the first capsule collection for Wallace & Barnes in 2011, he compared the new label’s vibe to “a men’s general store in the dust bowl in the ’20s or ’30s, where everything is boarded up but still intact.” His team was inspired by all the vintage garments they’d been collecting, and wanted to transmute the old dead-stock, rugged fabrics into looks for the modern man.
Muytjens no longer designs for J.Crew; he runs an inn in The Berkshires that looks absolutely delightful. But the spirit of those early days lives on in Wallace and Barnes’ latest fall collection, which is replete with duck canvas shirt jackets, carpenter’s jeans in Japanese denim, military officer’s chinos, and heathered tubular tees.
And having Wallace & Barnes under a fast-fashion umbrella is actually a good thing here. Most brands that make this sort of stuff refuse (or can’t afford) to have sales. But J.Crew seems to have a sale anytime someone sneezes. You can currently bring home a piece from the collection for 40% off with code GOBIG.
