On Saturday, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady turned 42.
On Sunday, the six-time Super Bowl winner is getting his present from the team — a two-year contract extension.
On Sunday afternoon, ESPN’s Field Yates reported Brady and the Patriots are “close” to finalizing an extension for the birthday boy.
“The Patriots and QB Tom Brady are close to finalizing an agreement on a contract extension, per league source,” Yates wrote on Twitter. “Should be done soon.”
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network followed that up with a report of his own.
“The Patriots and QB Tom Brady have agreed to terms on a contract extension, source said,” Rapoport wrote on Twitter. “No details yet, but sounds like it’s a short term deal, as you’d expect.”
Before signing the new deal, Brady was set to enter the final season of a two-year restructured deal that would have paid him $15 million and carried a $27 million cap hit in 2019.
Full terms for the new contract have not been released as of this writing, but his salary for this season has been raised to $23 million. The extension will keep Brady with the Patriots through 2021 but the contract will be adjusted with each passing year.
Even though Tom Brady is signing a two-year extension, he always will be on a year-to-deal with the Patriots. Deal can, and will, be adjusted each year as long as Brady plays.

The timing for the extension is interesting as Brady did not seem concerned about getting more years tacked onto his deal when he discussed the matter with reporters earlier this week.
“Have I earned [an extension]? I don’t know, that’s up for talk show debate,” Brady told reporters at training camp. “What do you guys think? Should we take a poll? Talk to Mr. [Patriots owner Robert] Kraft.”
Apparently, someone did.
