Great cocktails have no boundaries … geographically speaking.
Tales of the Cocktail, the annual weeklong bacchanalia / workshops of bar professionals, liquor brands and spirits lovers in New Orleans, just announced the winners of this year’s Spirited Awards, honoring the world’s top bar, bartenders, brand ambassadors, writers and more. The major winners hailed from major cities all over the world, including New York, Miami, Sydney, Singapore, London and Las Vegas.
We overuse the phrase “the Oscars of booze,” but as an industry event, the Spirited Awards are a great barometer of what the bar industry itself considers high quality: the awards were chosen by a panel of 140 industry experts and featured American, International and Global categories.
Some standouts:
American Bartender of the Year: Julio Cabrera of Cafe La Trova, Miami, FL
International Bartender of the Year: Monica Berg of Tayer and Elementary, London
Best American Cocktail Bar: Attaboy in New York, NY
Best New American Cocktail Bar: Katana Kitten in New York, NY … where you can find this summer’s best drink perfected (that’d be the whisky highball)
Best New International Cocktail Bar: MAYBE SAMMY in Sydney, Australia
World’s Best Cocktail Menu: Trick Dog in San Francisco, CA
World’s Best Bar: Dante in New York, NY
As well, Herbs and Rye in Las Vegas won multiple awards, for Best American Bar Team and High Volume Cocktail Bar, and Atlas Bar in Singapore won both Best International Cocktail Bar and World’s Best Spirits Selection. And Cocktail Codex, the excellent cocktail tome by NYC’s Death and Co. team, took home Best New Cocktail or Bartending Book.
