The 2019 British Grand Prix ended with Lewis Hamilton, driving for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, emerging as the victor. Following Hamilton was his teammate for Mercedes, Valtteri Bottas. It was Hamilton’s 6th time winning the race, establishing a new record.

Hamilton also set a mark for the race’s fastest lap on his final lap of the course.

As Jalopnik reports, pit strategy had a lot to do with the race’s final outcome.

For the first segment of the race, the two Mercedes ran in lock step one behind each other. Bottas, as the leader, was given the option to pit first, and he took it. Lewis, meanwhile, stayed out a handful of laps later to play a different strategy. That paid dividends when Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi spun off and got stuck in the litter, calling out a safety car.

Hamilton took advantage of the safety car to pit while he was in the lead; this remained the focus of his strategy, which proved effective for the rest of the race.

As The Guardian put it, the race behind the two Mercedes drivers involved some thrillingly chaotic moments, as drivers Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel grappled for position.

Vettel and then Pierre Gasly were soon involved, too, as the evenly matched rivals repeatedly went wheel to wheel. Verstappen, however, had the advantage. He had hared after Vettel in third and beat him through Stowe, the German followed him too hot into Vale and went into the back of the Red Bull, taking them both off track.

The result was a race in which the battle for first was arguably less interesting than what took place elsewhere on the course. With his landmark victory, however, Hamilton ends the day on a strikingly positive note for both himself and his team.
