O.J. Simpson Now Has a Twitter Account

It’s been a rough week for Twitter. On June 13, word spread that the social media site had purged thousands of accounts established to illicitly influence political matters around the globe —not a great look for an already-embattled service.

And this weekend, O.J. Simpson set up a Twitter account.

The account’s bio reads tersely, “If you don’t see it here, I didn’t say it.” Simpson’s first post, a video, suggests that he was inspired to create this account to counteract the presence of fake social media accounts ostensibly set up by him.

As of this writing, Simpson follows all of six accounts: several that are football-related, as well as his son Justin and his lawyer Malcolm LaVergne.

Simpson was in the news most recently in 2017, when he was released from prison after nine years on armed robbery and kidnapping charges. Since then, efforts have been made to recoup money that Simpson owes following a civil court’s ruling regarding the wrongful deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson.

“I’ve got a little getting even to do,” Simpson says in the video. This moment sits uncomfortably beside other such unsettling instances in his history in the last few decades, including the attempted publication of the book If I Did It and the airing of the 2018 television special O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession.

Rather than exploring Simpson’s ill-conceived foray into social media, you might be better off revisiting the first season of the series American Crime Story, which memorably recounts Simpson’s 1994 trial for murder and the issues of race, class and gender that it raised. Though even the cast of that is not without some legal trouble these days.
