Like golf legends Arnold Palmer, Charles Sifford and Jack Nicklaus before him, Tiger Woods was the recipient of the highest civilian honor the United States can bestow upon one of its citizens.

During a ceremony in the Rose Garden, President Donald Trump presented the 43-year-old golfer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump called Woods a “true legend” and spoke about when he won the first of 15 majors.

“It was in 1997 at Augusta National, Bobby Jones’ temple to the sport of golf, that the game would forever change,” Trump said. “For four straight days at the Masters tournament, Tiger stunned the world with his power, grace and strategic brilliance … We can’t wait to see what’s next Tiger. There are no winners like you.”

The honor is given to citizens who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to the White House.

Joined at the ceremony by his mother, daughter, son, girlfriend and caddie, Woods offered this thanks to his supporters. “You’ve seen the good and bad, the highs and lows, and I would not be in this position without all of your help,” he said.

Woods also tweeted about the honor afterward.

Tiger will go for this 16th major championship when the PGA Championship begins next week.
