Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t believe Conor McGregor has really tapped out.
Nurmagomedov, who beat McGregor for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 229 in October of 2018, said he doesn’t think his rival is “finished” fighting in the octagon.
Last week, McGregor announced on Twitter he was retiring from “the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art.’”
Nurmagomedov isn’t taking the cheese.
Speaking Tuesday at a Moscow university, Nurmagomedov said McGregor “couldn’t reach a deal with the UFC and it’s so they feel they’ve lost him and they could lose money.” He added: “I don’t think he’s finished.”
Nurmagomedov has good cause not to believe McGregor as the Irishman previously announced he was done fighting in April 2016. He changed his mind days late and returned to the cage for a rematch with Nate Diaz.
Despite being the most well-known UFC fighter on the planet, the 30-year-old Irishman hasn’t won a fight since beating Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.
In addition to his retirement announcement, McGregor was in the news last week when it was revealed he was under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in Ireland in December of 2018.
