Even though Amazon is no longer putting a headquarters in New York, founder Jeff Bezos may still have some big business interests in the Big Apple.
At least Charles Oakley says so.
During a recent podcast appearance, the former Knick told The Ringer’s Bill Simmons and Jason Concepcion that Bezos “wants to buy the Knicks.”
“He was going to try Amazon in Long Island, and he went to Virginia,” Oakley said. “He still (wants) to do some real estate in New York. Why not buy the Garden? That’s someone you can’t question. It ain’t like he needs to get three or four other investors. He’s the investor, himself.”
If Bezos does pony up for the Knicks, it’s going to cost him somewhere north of $4 billion as they are the most valuable franchise in the NBA, despite having the worst record in the league.
Following the Knicks on the list of the NBA’s most valuable franchises are the Los Angeles Lakers ($3.7B), Golden State Warriors ($3.5B), Chicago Bulls ($2.9B), and Boston Celtics ($2.8B).
All of that said, Oakley’s opinions need to be taken with a grain of salt as he has had a longstanding gripe with current Knicks owner James Dolan.
Regardless, whether it is to Bezos or another billionaire, Dolan should sell the Knicks.
