Sitting down with the team for an interview on Friday, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has a shot at becoming the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
But, according to a report from a newspaper close to where he grew up, The Canton Repository, the Green Bay gig is not the one McDaniels really has his eye on.
Though they have not reached out to him formally nor he to them, McDaniels and the Browns reportedly have a mutual interest in him taking the reins in Cleveland.
According to the Repository, the Browns “are squarely” on McDaniels’ radar and he “is enthusiastically interested in the Cleveland opening.”
McDaniels is also on the radar for the Browns and Cleveland has “used back channels” to show their “mutual preliminary interest” but have stopped short of asking him to an early interview.
“Browns general manager John Dorsey has been good at cloaking what he is up to, including in the eyes of some obvious candidates,” according to the paper. “However, indications are that McDaniels is a very serious candidate.”
An Ohio native, McDaniels has been a candidate to coach the Browns before and met with the team’s previous owner in 2009 about the possibility. He also “had a substantial visit” with Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield before the Browns selected him in the 2018 draft and the pair “hit it off.”
While none of that means McDaniels would turn down the chance to coach Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay if offered the job, it does seem to indicate the position with the Browns might be a better fit for him than initially thought, if not his outright preference.
