In an 80-page document which mostly concerns Google, the Australian arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp called for a potential break up of the internet giant.
In the submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, News Corp Australia indicated Google has too much power over news outlets and online advertisers.
As a result, Google’s “ecosystem” allows it to control the results of internet searches and then charge advertisers based on how many people viewed their ads, according to the submission.
Citing Google’s alleged “anti-competitive” practices, News Corp Australia asked the ACCC to implement a “bold solution” and considering breaking Google up.
Doing that will “create a competitive market for search engines, mobile operating systems, internet browsers (and) the supply of digital advertising,” the company said in its submission.
Though Murdoch probably wouldn’t vote for Elizabeth Warren if he could, the Deomcratic senator running for president in 2020, said she also would break up the big tech giant if elected.
In a November interview, President Trump also said he was “very seriously” considering taking antitrust action against Google, Facebook, and Amazon.
