Zaha Hadid is one of the most polarizing figures in architecture.
On the one hand, she’s won every design award under the sun and earned the plaudits of everyone from the Guggenheim to TIME to architectural demi-god (and former mentor) Rem Koolhaas. On the other hand, she’s got a habit of irking traditionalists and hoi polloi the world over with her forward-thinking designs (read: her accepted but then later scrapped proposal for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Stadium).
Her first residential project — a sprawling building overlooking the new Highline at 520 W. 28th Street — is no different. The project is an uber-modern, typically Hadidian temple of glass, steel and sweeping elliptical contours, a far-cry from the humble, rectangular and decidedly American art deco most associate with Manhattan’s skyline.
Yesterday, Hadid arrived in New York to announce the official launch of sales for residences within 520 via Related Companies.
They won’t come cheap. Two-bedroom apartments will start at $4.9 million, with the largest penthouse listed at $50 million. The building, to be completed in early 2017, also offers a spacious roof deck, a beautiful indoor pool and a full-service spa.
And, of course, a covetable location in one of the country’s most bustling shopping and arts centers: Chelsea.
