If you’re a mega-fan of Tarantino’s work, you’ll know that his highly creative movies are jam-packed with references to classic films, “trunk shots,” easter eggs, and connections to his other films. In fact, some fans have even claimed that all of Tarantino’s movies are connected.
For example, his character Mia Wallace, played by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction, makes reference to a TV show she was going to star in: Fox Force Five. Its characters and plot sound eerily similar to that of Kill Bill. (That film is soon to be getting its third installment, which Tarantino recently claimed would be one of his last.)
So what of the all-Tarantino-movies-are-connected claim? In a recent interview with The Australian, the director had this to say:
“There’s the realer-than-real universe, all right, and all the characters inhabit that one. But then there’s this movie universe. And so From Dusk Till Dawn, Kill Bill, they all take place in this special movie universe. So basically when the characters of Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, when they go to the movies, Kill Bill is what they go to see. From Dusk Till Dawn is what they see.”
What that means is anything’s fair game within that “movie universe” in terms of connections to previous movies (or for foreshadowing future films). So fans were right all along. This is all fine and dandy, but that still doesn’t explain one major fact: When Tarantino appears in his own movies, does that mean he exists both in the real and movie universe?
