Creedence Clearwater Revival’s creative leader, John Fogerty, has material for a new feel-good song after being recently reunited with an important piece of rock history that literally made him weep with joy.
According to Rolling Stone, Fogerty’s wife tracked down his vintage Rickenbacker guitar, which he first bought in 1967, and used to write and record a number of the band’s greatest hits on, including “Up Around the Bend” and “Green River.” He also performed on with the instrument at Woodstock.
As the story goes, when the band split up in the early ’70s, Fogerty gave the guitar away. It had a distinctive look: He had painted the word “ACME” on its headstock as a joking nod to the fake corporation featured in the Warner Bros. cartoons.
It took 44 long years, but the missing guitar was recently re-acquired, and given to the stunned rocker as a Christmas present.
Fogerty’s since plugged it back in and plans to start playing it as early as March 3, when he resumes his tour at the Wynn Las Vegas. “It’s crying out for me to make some new music on it,” he told Rolling Stone.
