Procrastinators can breathe a little easier this year: There’s three extra days to finish filing tax returns.
The usual April 15th deadline falls on a weekend this year, and traditionally, that pushes the filing deadline to the following Monday — unless that Monday happens to be a holiday. This particular upcoming Monday is Emancipation Day, which is a legal holiday in D.C., where the IRS central offices are located.
So Tuesday it is.
CNN Money notes that it’s important to remember that an extension to file does not mean an extension to pay owed taxes — anyone failing to do so by Tuesday, April 18 will be subject to late payment penalties and interest.
