Prince Philip is stepping away from his royal duties and will stop carrying out public engagements this autumn, according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.
An emergency meeting was called for members of the royal staff in the early hours of the morning, according to The New York Times. Television crews raced to the palace, and one tabloid incorrectly reported that the 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh had died. The story was quickly removed.
Prince Philip will attend his scheduled engagements until August. The role of the queen will remain the same.
