Meet the sporting version of the Kardashians.
Head of the most buzzed-about family in basketball, LaVar Ball, the brash, say-anything father, appeared on everybody’s radar during this past year’s college basketball season. He’s raised three basketball-playing sons with an NBA pedigree—especially with eldest son Lonzo projected to go in the top three at the upcoming NBA Draft.
How’s LaVar done it? According to ESPN The Magazine, by just talking and talking and talking some more. As in, “Speak it into existence….Keep talking about it until it happens,” as he told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.
The elder Ball has been somewhat of a controversial presence since last March, having proclaimed that his son, Lonzo, was better than both two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry and the league’s best player, LeBron James.
Then there’s the shoe and apparel company, Big Baller Brand, that LaVar founded and has been hawking, with its almost-$500-a-pair signature sneakers that Lonzo will soon be sporting on NBA courts. There’s even a Big Baller Media Group and Ball Sports Group talent agency, which reps Lonzo.
LaVar believes his sons are worth billions. And he might just be right.
