Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon told Charlie Rose during a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday night that he is “absolutely” going to war with the Republican party — specifically naming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan as two conservative leaders who do not support President Trump.
“The Republican establishment is trying to nullify the 2016 election. That’s a brutal fact we have to face,” Bannon told Rose, specifically naming McConnell and Ryan. “They do not want Donald Trump’s populist, economic nationalist agenda to be implemented. It’s very obvious.”
Bannon went on to recount a story in which he says McConnell instructed the president to back off of his “drain the swamp” talk.
“He basically said, ‘I don’t want to hear any more of this “drain the swamp talk,’” Bannon recounted. “Day one. Did not want us to go there. Wanted us to back off.”
