Last night’s Kansas City Royals-Toronto Blue Jays matchup wasn’t part of a playoff hunt or a wild card showdown; the Royals are 20.5 games out of first place in the AL Central, while the Blue Jays are in dead last in the AL East. But it was record-breaking, nonetheless.
In the top of the 8th inning, when Royals left fielder Alex Gordon cranked his eighth home run into right center, history went down. Per SB Nation, with that shot, fell the MLB single-season home-run record. The total? A staggering 5,694 homers.
This year has seen a return of the longball in a big way, what with New York Yankees rookie Aaron Judge chasing the rookie HR record with 44, NL Rookie of the Year sure-shot Cody Bellinger blazing the way in Los Angeles with 38, Giancarlo Stanton blasting 55 so far, and the Arizona Diamondback J.D. Martinez tying an MLB record with four jacks in a single game.
