The 2017 World Series has been a wild ride, with jaw-dropping home runs and breathtaking plays in the field culminating in a winner-take-all Game 7 to be played Wednesday night in Los Angeles.
But perhaps the most important inning of the entire Fall Classic was as mundane as they come. The sixth inning of Game 6 might go down “as the inning that saved the Dodgers season,” according to ESPN’s David Schoenfield, and for good reason.
Brandon Morrow made up for a disastrous previous appearance on the mound by getting two outs before being relieved by Tony Watson, who recorded the final out of the inning before being replaced in the lineup by pinch hitter Chase Utley. Utley, who was 0-14 in the postseason, was able to make the most of his at-bat, getting hit in the foot after Austin Barnes notched a single. With two men on and no outs, the Dodgers rallied to manufacture a run on a deep sacrifice fly by Corey Seager, putting Los Angeles up 2-1 and giving the team a lead it would not relinquish.
If the Dodgers wrap things up tonight, the sixth inning will be the focal point of a magnificent turnaround. If the Astros clinch Game 7, the team will have been able to overcome a tough loss in a game they thought would be theirs for the taking.
Either way, the sixth inning will be looked at as one of the most pivotal points in a series many are already calling one of the most dramatic in the history of the sport.
