If you’re struggling with mental health issues like anxiety or depression, or general stress, joining a running group could help alleviate your symptoms, according to a Men’s Journal report.
Sure, many people run as a means to lose weight or stay fit, but the benefits of running could reach beyond that. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that people who have joined a running group felt decreased levels of anxiety, stress, and depression.
The individuals involved in the study met two times a week for group runs, ending the study by participating in a local 5K run.
Researchers believe that the decrease in these stressful levels is due to endorphins being released in the brain while running, but could also be because of the camaraderie among the runners in the group.
